Positive: This was my favourite place in Mexico. We had our first genuinely friendly welcome in 12 days of travel from momo on reception. We stayed in a bungalow next to our boys aged 10 & 12. Bungalows are solidly built with concrete but made to look like wooden huts and they do blend into the beautiful surroundings. Beds comfy and aircon decent. The main draw of the hotel is the access to the lake which is INCREDIBLE. The location is protected by a small mangrove island which means the even when the main lake is a bit rough, when the wind picks up, the lake by blue Bayou is sheltered and calm. Lots of fish, birds and turtles to looks for off the jetty. We booked a boat trip from Casa China, a short walk away, which we enjoyed. You could also reach cenote negro, bird island and canal de los pirates in the free kayaks if you had the time and energy and went in the morning when the lake is calm. There also a big raised platform which is empty and looks over the lake. We did some yoga in here. Bacalar is a lovely town, the nicest town we visited in Mexico, calm, friendly, good prices and friendly, healthy dogs. Go to Bacalar and go here. Avoid Tulum and spend more time here if you're a family.

Negative: Breakfast is small, piece of cake or pastry and coffee but keeps you going til lunch.
